Cardiology and Cardiac

Few people realise how much techniques have improved since surgery was first used in the 1950s. Undergoing a heart procedure was once a life changing decision, yet due to medical advances it no longer means spending weeks in hospital and months recuperating.

Increasingly, advances such as keyhole surgery are helping patients recover more quickly. The risks associated with surgery and anaesthesia have also declined, making it a good choice for people whose health and quality of life would otherwise by compromised by heart problems.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as palpitations, feeling faint or shortness of breath it is essential to visit your GP who can advise you on further examinations when needed.
There are a number of investigations which be carried out to pinpoint if there are any problems with the heart.

How Rivers Hospital can help you?

We are able to offer an extensive range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of any underlying cardiovascular conditions that may be responsible for your symptoms.

Through our cardiology consultants, we are able to arrange:

  • Blood tests that check predisposition to cardiovascular disease
  • 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • 24 / 48 hour and 6-day Holter monitoring (Ambulatory ECG monitoring)
  • 6-day cardiac event recording
  • Stress Test (Exercise ECG)
  • Echocardiogram
  • Chest X-ray
  • CT coronary angiography
  • CT coronary calcium score for cardiac risk assessment
  • Angiogram (cardiac catheterisation)
  • Lung function testing
The above investigations provide a full range of cardiac diagnostic tests that can be used to investigate symptoms and conditions such as chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, dizzy spells, hypertension, angina, heart failure and murmurs. Your cardiologist will then be able to advise on the options for your condition.

How can I access cardiology treatment?

The first step is to obtain a referral to a consultant cardiologist at the Rivers Hospital from your GP. This enables your consultant to gain as much insight into your medical history as possible.
