Our New Mothers Physiotherapy Check looks at the principles of Physiotherapy assessment with functional retraining. Following birth there are many changes to your body which we will help to restore. These can be muscle imbalances, postural changes, or altered alignment. It is important to correct these changes otherwise pain, prolapse, DRA (separation of the abdominal muscles) or UIC (bladder/bowel dysfunction) could persist.
This physiotherapy check identifies the muscle imbalances you may be suffering from through an assessment and the exercise programme we work through can help to correct these. With the aim to regain stability allowing your body to function as it used to
Who is this service aimed at?
Women who have had a baby and would like reassurance that their muscles are working optimally after delivery and that that they are ready to start exercise.
When to come and see us?
Ideally six weeks or greater after delivery.
How often should you be seen?
You may only need an initial assessment and a follow up if required. Further visits may be arranged as needed. This will be discussed at your initial assessment once we understand your body's ability.
What would the initial assessment session involve?
• Medical History
• Posture assessment
• Assessment of core and pelvic floor muscles (optional)
• Assessment of tummy muscle separation (DRA)
• Help with bowel and bladder problems
• Advice on return to sport
• Advice on return to sex life
• Help with back or pelvic pain
Based on the assessment an individual exercise programme will be provided.
What follow up treatments could I expect?
Treatment would consist of corrective / restorative exercises.
